What Do You Eat on the South Beach Diet Menu?

Published by Linda Miller under Recipes

by Linda Miller

If your idea of a diet is an eating plan which will allow you to make healthy choices about the food you eat, you no doubt will have been disappointed on more than one occasion in the past. There are numerous diets where you are so restricted, you just end up craving for those things on the “forbidden” list, and your chance of succeeding at losing those surplus pounds is practically non-existent.

Fortunately, that is not the case with the South Beach Diet. Contrary to other diet plans, the list of foods you can eat on the South Beach Diet is much longer than the list of foods you must avoid.

You can still eat the foods you love when you are on the South Beach Diet. The only difference with the South Beach Diet is that you are eating them in a way that is better for you. Let’s say you’re a meat lover. On the South Beach Diet menu, you can still enjoy a delicious steak, just make it a leaner cut and don’t totally pig out.

When you are first considering the South Beach Diet, have a long look at Phase 1. This is the most restricted part of the diet, yet you will find it is surprisingly varied and quite a few of the things you would expect you are not allowed are there on the menu.

For example, you can eat sweets during Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet. Yes, you read that right. You are allowed to eat up to 75 “sweet” calories per day during Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet. You can also eat beef, eggs, low-fat lunch meat, pork, poultry and cheese, as long as it is low-fat or fat-free. And if you’re a seafood lover, the South Beach Diet won’t feel like a diet to you at all, because seafood is allowed - and promoted - on all phases of the diet plan.

Many people who do their own cooking are often unsure about appropriate ingredients when adapting their usual recipes. At the start of the South Beach Diet, you are restricted to canola and olive oils and non or low fat milk and yogurt but these bans are lifted as soon as you have made your way past phase 1 and home-cooking becomes far easier and much more straightforward.

Once you hit Phase 2, you are once again allowed to eat fruits and grains. Because of the cleansing your body undergoes during Phase 1, though, you won’t crave these foods like you did before. Your body is now better equipped to process the foods you eat and that will help you continue to lose weight until you achieve your weight loss goal.

Although the South Beach Diet menu does ask you to make adjustment to the food you eat, you will be pleased with the types of food you can still enjoy. By following the South Beach Diet, you will learn how to eat everything in a healthier manner, and this will lead to healthy and permanent weight loss.

Learning the Essentials of Gourmet Cooking

Published by Ashley King under Cooking

by Ashley King

Gourmet cooking may seem like something that is beyond the sphere of the everyday cook, but this is far from the case. There are several gourmet cooking techniques that you can implement to improve your overall cooking skill.

One path to developing these skills is to sign on for a gourmet cooking class. The downside is that many of these courses can be quite costly, and you might not have the time in your schedule to make it to all the classes.

With gourmet cooking classes not an option for some, what are other ways that you can learn about gourmet cooking that you can incorporate into everyday meals?

Fortunately, there are several things that you can do that can help you learn gourmet cooking techniques that you can incorporate into meals that you make every day.

First off, you have to think of gourmet cooking in a realistic light. It doesn’t mean expensive, nor does it mean rare or exotic. Gourmet cooking entails utilizing only the freshest ingredients that are of the highest quality.

A good way to approach gourmet cooking is to take a look at everyday spices. An example would be garlic. A gourmet chef would never use garlic powder, bottled garlic, or any other type of garlic that isn’t freshly chopped. A gourmet chef would also never use dried and bottled herbs. Instead, fresh herbs from the produce section of the grocery store would be used.

Some ingredients in their freshest format will be more expensive than their processed counterparts. But you’ll soon recognize that the cost difference isn’t unreasonable, and it’s still a good deal less expensive than dining at a restaurant. When you get used to gourmet cooking, you’ll lose your desire to eat out. You will be capable of making scrumptious meals in your own kitchen. This way, you’ll have even more chances to hone your cooking skills.

The quickest and easiest way to incorporate gourmet cooking into your everyday cooking routine is to improve the overall quality of the ingredients that you are putting into your meals. Then you will have to learn how to cook the ingredients correctly.

The first way to learn how to do this is through books. Books are great tools for teaching you the basics and allowing you to work at your own pace. Your local bookstore should have plenty to choose from, so go there and look through a few until you find one you like.

Your cookbook should cover all of the basics such as what types of knives you should use, how to make chicken stock, and how to clarify butter. All of these things are basic cooking techniques that can sometimes seem unapproachable because they are generally thought of as being gourmet.

Before long, you’ll realize that gourmet cooking is a skill that anyone can learn. All it takes is some time and effort.

Hot Coffee And Its Proper Preparation

Published by Carol Hughes under Coffee

by Carol Hughes

There are so many people who love drinking coffee, I believe you are not an exception. Coffee is everywhere. You will not have any problem looking for a place to enjoy your favorite drink. It has developed into different flavors because it has become a social hangout for people of all ages. Hot Coffee is still the most popular though there are other blended / iced version of coffee.

To Prepare Hot Coffee Correctly

How About The Temperature

The right temperature is required if you want to fully appreciate the palatable taste. You might risk of scalding your tongue if the water used to brew or mix the coffee is too hot, and you drink it immediately. What you have to do is wait for hot coffee to cool a little, this can be tricky because it may cool too much and therefore decrease its taste. If you let it stand in an open container for over 30 minutes the flavor deteriorates and in the end it gives you a bitter taste.

For extracting the correct flavor from the beans, the right temperature is at around 195 degrees or just off the boil. After the water has reached a rolling boil, you take it off the heat and wait for 2 minutes, that is off the boil. Do not rush when drinking hot coffee, you don’t want to burn yourself.

What is the ideal serving temperature for coffee? 165 - 175 degrees is the right temperature. If you stand the coffee for too long the flavor of the coffee won’t keep. Don’t just leave it while you stand the coffee. Be in mind cups cool faster than brewing coffee in a carafe or an air pot.

For most coffee lovers, they do not drink coffee in the morning only, but at any time after their meals or during their breaks. Some serious drinker even have hot coffee or cold coffee at night.

Hot coffee can be a gentle stimulant for some drinkers and become necessary for many other coffee lovers.

A Dull Knife in Your Kitchen Makes You a Bad Cook!

Published by Robert Cooksey under Cooking

by Robert Cooksey

The most expensive knife isn’t necessarily the best. If you don’t keep your knives up in good condition, they won’t be easy to cook with, no matter how costly they were. It’s vital to have the right knives and be able to make sure they’re in good shape, if you want to have an efficient kitchen and avoid accidents.

Every cook should have a good chef’s knife. A chef’s knife has a large handle, and blade that’s wide at the base but tapers to a point. These can be used for almost all your kitchen tasks, and it’s not really worth it to get a full knife set. Instead, invest in a single good chef’s knife that will hold an edge, and keep it good and sharp.

Remember that not all chef’s knives are the same. Their blades come in a variety of different size and are measured by blade length. Be sure not to get a knife that’s too small. In fact, the smallest all purpose knife you should get has an eight inch blade, not counting the handle. While a small knife might seem easier to use or safer, they often aren’t. Remember that you can use a large knife to cut up something small, but small knives can’t cut large objects.

There’s a bewildering variety out there, as even the above eight inch chef’s knife can be found in versions costing between fifteen dollars and more than a hundred fifty. People on a budget should avoid the cheapest knives and settle on one that’s about twenty-five dollars. Look for a significant overhang below the handle to help you keep your knife sharp.

Many people think expensive knives keep an edge longer. However, if you cut a sturdy vegetable, chances are the edge will need a touch up, no matter how good your knife might be. On a daily basis, use a steel for edge straightening. This is the long stick that comes with many knife sets, and it was traditionally made of steel, though many are now made of diamond or ceramic. When you use this, swipe each side of the knife down the steel at about a twenty degree angle. If you’re not comfortable deciding what that angle looks like, you also have some other options.

A knife and tool sharpener, which has a built in angle, will help you straighten a knife without a lot of skill. Hold the knife with the edge up, and the tip hanging off the counter’s edge. Swipe your sharpener over the edge a few times, and the blade will be a lot sharper. Remember that this kind of sharpener slowly eats away at the blade, and will shorten its life. However, a sharp knife for a shorter time is better than one that is always dull. This is worth keeping in mind if you’re unable to have your knives sharpened professionally and aren’t comfortable with a steel.

However you choose to keep your knives sharp, wash and dry them before and after you sharpen. Once you get used to having your knives sharp, it’ll be easy to tell when the edge is going. Cutting will be a lot harder, especially on tough things. Want to test it? Slide the knife along the skin of a tomato or a peach, but don’t press down. Sharp knives will cut in right away.

A knife should always be treated carefully if you want to preserve its edge. Never use cutting boards of glass, granite, or other hard materials. Wood and plastic are better. The edge should be preserved from damage by immediate washing and drying after use. Store your knife somewhere out of the way of other dishes, so it’ll stay in good shape.

Dull Knives Hurt You And Your Cooking

Published by Robert Cooksey under Cooking

by Robert Cooksey

The most expensive knife isn’t necessarily the best. If you don’t keep your knives up in good condition, they won’t be easy to cook with, no matter how costly they were. It’s vital to have the right knives and be able to make sure they’re in good shape, if you want to have an efficient kitchen and avoid accidents.

Every cook should be sure to have a decent chef’s knife. This is the familiar large handled knife with a wide base and pointed tip, and it’s the knife you’ll use for most of your cutting tasks. Because chef’s knives are so versatile, you won’t even need to invest in a full knife set. All you need is a great, very sharp chef’s knife to accomplish almost everything.

The variety of knives can be bewildering, since even an eight inch chef’s knife comes in examples between fifteen and a hundred and fifty dollars. Look for a knife that’s around twenty-five dollars if you’re on a budget, but more money can get you a more attractive knife. A significant overhang below the handle will help you keep it sharp.

You might have heard that a costly knife will hold it’s edge longer. That’s not really true. Good steel does keep an edge better than the cheapest metal, but cutting any sturdy root vegetable will cause the edge to go out of true. It doesn’t matter if you’re using a mediocre knife or one that’s top of the line. To help fix this, use a steel to straighten the edge on a daily basis. Steels are the long sticks you’ve probably seen with knife sets, and are traditionally made from steel. However, many are not ceramic or diamond. Using a steel is just a matter of swiping it down the side of the knife at a twenty degree angle, but this takes some experience. For those who aren’t comfortable with this process, there are also a few easier options.

You can get knife and tool sharpeners that have their own built in angle, eliminating guesswork. With them, you can straighten a knife edge without needing skill. Just hold the knife with the edge up, tip hanging off the counter’s edge. Swipe the sharpener over the edge a few times, and you’ll get a much sharper blade. However, this kind of sharpener can reduce the life of your knife, taking metal off the edge. Still, a knife that’s sharp and lasts a few years is better than a dull one for a lifetime.

Always treat your knife carefully, too. Don’t use a granite or glass cutting board, because they’ll hurt the edge. Instead, a plastic or wood cutting surface is preferred. Also, wash and dry the knife immediately after use to prevent a sink full of dishes from taking the edge off.

3 Ways To Start Cooking Light

Published by Gregory Spence under Cooking

by Greg Spence

Cooking light is all about healthier cooking. Cooking light need not mean bland and tasteless food. It can simply mean taking an existing favorite recipe and substituting some ingredients for their lighter alternatives.

To start cooking lighter substitute your regular high calorie or overly fatty ingredients with their lighter alternatives. There are many alternatives to the staple food ingredients we are used to using. Choose those ingredients that are low in trans fats and lower in calories.

Lowering your calorie intake is important for a healthier life therefore you should concentrate on low fat dressings in sandwiches, for example, and tinned foods in water rather than oil. Fat free ranch is good for dips and low fat mayonnaise is a better alternative for sandwiches.

Bread can be a very unhealthy food, especially if you eat a lot of it. Go for a 100% whole grain bread because it is high in fiber and low in fat. Choose whole grain also when buying muffins, rolls and other foods such as pasta and rice. Whole grain foods help to protect against some diseases and can make you feel less lethargic. A great start to cooking light.

Change the oil you cook with. Olive oil is expensive but is ideal. Try using smaller amounts, you will often find your food tastes better. If you cannot afford olive oil, canola is a good alternative which won’t burn a hole in your pocket.

If you are into baking, try using Splenda, a no calorie sweetener instead of sugar and try unsweetened apple sauce instead of vegetable oil. Line your baking pans with no fat cooking spray instead of butter and use semi sweet or preferably dark chocolate.

What Foods Are Allowed on the South Beach Diet?

Published by Linda Miller under Recipes

by Linda Miller

One of the first things anyone ever notices when checking out a diet menu to see if they think they can do it is the “can haves” and the “cannot haves”. You will soon form the opinion that you will not go far with a diet when it is unvaried and boring and all the things you would normally enjoy eating are off the menu. This however is not the case with the South Beach Diet.

Go ahead and examine the foods recommended on the South Beach Diet. Happily, you will find that the South Beach diet recipes use a wide variety of foods and diverse cooking methods to prepare meals that are truly mouth-watering combinations.

The South Beach Diet is highly successful because it does not make you give up all of the foods you enjoy eating. Delicious meats like chicken breast, turkey, lean beef, Cornish game hen and boiled ham are on the “Can Eat” list, even during the most restrictive phase of the South Beach Diet, Phase 1.

The South Beach Diet is Mecca to the seafood lover. Eating the fruit of the sea is encouraged on all phases of the South Beach Diet, and you are especially reminded to eat fish that offer up high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, like cod and mackerel.

Fruits and many types of grains are not on the menu during Phase 1, but for those of you who really miss these items, do not worry, they are reintroduced on a gradual basis during Phase 2. The fact that you no longer crave these foods will mean you significantly reduce the portion size when you are once again allowed to eat them.

Phase 2 also allows dairy products and full-fat cheeses back into your diet. As with the carbs you gave up in Phase 1, you will now find that your body does not crave these foods like it did before. This helps you to eat them in a healthier way.

Vegetables are found in abundance throughout the South Beach Diet. Favorites like asparagus, cauliflower, celery and collard greens can be eaten freely. Want a little treat? How about pickles sweetened with Splenda.

Another great menu item on the South Beach Diet is salads. Take some of the meats and cheeses you can eat on Phase 1, and add a nice helping of romaine lettuce or spinach. You will have a meal-size salad that will be both tasty and healthful, and you wont’ feel like you’re on a diet at all!

When you look at the foods that are allowed on the South Beach Diet, you may be surprised to find many things you thought you would have to give up while dieting. Even when you take away the foods that are restricted, the sheer variety of food combinations available with the South Beach Diet are what makes this a popular program that will help you successfully reach your weight loss goals.
